Republican States

The Red Hues Of American Politics

Across the nation's vast expanse, the political landscape of the United States varies greatly. There are blue Democratically leaning states, purple mixed states, and then there are the red Republican states. These variances are a reflection of the diversity of political views and values across individual states and congressional districts. A key tool in mapping these political inclinations is the Cook Partisan Voting Index (CPVI). This comprehensive index allows us to see how citizens are swaying, politically speaking, by analyzing the democratic or republican votes in the last two Presidential elections compared to the national average. Notably, the CPVI provides insight into which states most strongly align with the Republican party.

  • Wyoming stands out as the state with the highest Republican lean with an R+25 rating per CPVI. Showing an overwhelming Republican influence in the electoral outcomes in this state.
  • The top five intensely Republican states of Wyoming, West Virginia, North Dakota, Oklahoma and Idaho (rated R+18 to R+25), being from relatively less populous and largely rural regions.
  • The traditionally 'red' southern and 'heartland' states remain consistently Republican, with Texas, a significant player in U.S. politics, leaning Republican with an R+5 rating.
  • The data also marks the penetration of Republican influence in traditional 'swing' or battleground states, such as Florida and Georgia, each with an R+3 rating. This echoes the close battles witnessed in these regions during election seasons.
