Best States For Working Moms

Working Moms across America

The complex, often precarious, balance between professional ambitions, childcare requirements, and personal life is a juggling act familiar to many working mothers in America today. This situation necessitates an environment that supports career growth, provides quality childcare, and offers a sustainable work-life balance. To shed light on how conducive different states are to this balancing act, we've created an index which assessed all 50 states and the District of Columbia across three key dimensions - Child Care, Professional Opportunities, and Work-Life Balance.

  • The top three states for working moms are Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. These states have above-average performance across all three key dimensions, signifying robust childcare infrastructures, superior professional opportunities, and healthy work-life balances.
  • Conversely, the four states with the worst scores are Mississippi and Louisiana with respective scores of 29.14 and 27.38, implying significant room for improvement in these states.
  • Diverse regional patterns emerge in the dataset. For instance, the Northeast region emerges as generally supportive for working moms, with seven states from this region ranking in the top 10. In contrast, Southern states generally rank lower based on the parameters assessed, indicating regional differences in policy structures and societal norms.
  • Despite having a significant number of working moms, populous states such as California are surprisingly ranked 41 on the list, while New York fares comparatively better, ranking 8th.
