How Many Countries in the World

Introduction

Being part of a global community means understanding not just our local environment, but the broader context of how many nations constitute our world.

According to the United Nations estimates, as of 2022, the world is home to 196 countries. Our data set elaborates on each of these, shedding light on their population figures.

  • The most populous countries globally are India and China, each with a massive population exceeding 1.4 billion. Collectively, these two countries hold nearly 36% of the world's total population.
  • Notably, only 11 countries house a population exceeding 100 million, indicating a high population concentration in a relatively small group of nations.
  • Toward the bottom of the list, there is an interesting clustering of tiny nations, many of which are island states, with populations under one million. Such countries include nations like Seychelles, Andorra, Bermuda, and Monaco.
  • European countries tend to have smaller populations. Countries like Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are exceptions, with populations exceeding 60 million.
  • There is a striking range in population sizes, from behemoths like India and China to mini nations like Nauru, with just around 10.9 thousand residents.
